Harvey

Harvey is one of the ghosts that resides in Alumni Hall, or the theatre. He is the most popular and appreciated theatre ghost. There are two different stories about Harvey how he became a ghost, and I will share both with you.

The first, more romantic story, is that Harvey was a student in the early 20th century at Western Maryland when WMC was still affiliated with the United Methodist Church. His family wanted him to become a Methodist reverend. Harvey felt this decision would leave him no room for his love of theatre. Harvey desperately wanted to please him family but he also could not imagine his life without theatre. His family abhorred his desire for theatre and insisted on the church. The evening before his graduation from WMC, Harvey, overcome with depression, doubt, and guilt, killed himself from the center of the balcony in the theater.

The second story is that he was a student living in Blanche Ward Hall. There was a party one weekend and, drunkenly, Harvey sat on the edge of a window and lost his balance and fell to the ground, three stories. He broke many bones and cracked his skull. His friends managed to call 911 and ran down the stairs and outside. They picked him up and carried him to the front of the theater so that the ambulance could just grab him when they arrived. Unfortunately, Harvey died on the steps of the theater.

Harvey is a “good ghost”. He can be spotted by students before a show goes up. It is meant as good luck. He is often blamed when lights in the building flicker or if any weird noises are heard.

  1. I remember this well, though I'm not certain calling 911 was possible in the early part of the 20th century. We used to have moments in the theater at Alumni Hall to honor Harvey. Tragic story either way.
